X-Bit labs is reporting that nVidia is prepping to release a “Hybrid SLI” setup to save power. According to the story, it will allow the system to intelligently switch from powerful GPU’s when doing serious rendering work, then when just casually surfing the web and sutch it will switch over to a on board GPU and sleep the video cards for power conservation. They also state they can have a Max Performance Mode by allowing all GPU’s to activate and the on board will handle remedial tasks such as UI, and the discrete cards (the powerful ones) will be free to do the heavy lifting.
No mention on if this is backwards compatible with current cards (not likely with their established hold on the Graphics market) and how it will handle Multiple Monitor setups.
Hey, any way to get another monitor hooked up gets a big thumbs-up with us. ![]()

Well, this is a good thing if you’re the kind of person who worries about the electric bill. But I have the feeling that this will only apply to companies looking to reduce costs, rather than your typical hardcore gamer.
However, I’m sure there are some intelligent gamers out there who would appreciate something like this. I know I would if I were paying the power bill.
I bought a Watts-Up device to calculate my draw in dollars a day on my main gaming rig, but so far the numbers have been largely inaccurate because a PC draws more when in use then when its idle.
So i need to retest during one of my nonstop gaming sessions.
