EverythingUSB.Com wrote a good review about a USB monitor that you would more likely be able to purchase sometime in the future. The Samsung 940UX, it still has no posted MSRP but if I had to guess, I would say it costs 300-400$ until USB monitors become more mainstream. You can only daisy-chain up to 6 monitors, not sure if we would consider this a pro or a con. One thing is for sure, Smooth DirectX video at high resolutions over USB is definitely a good thing.
I can’t help but wonder about the limitation. However, it could be that with each monitor added, the more CPU cycles that need to be used to maintain them. And given his comment about 50-70% CPU power being dedicated just to play back a video on one USB monitor indicates that this may very well be the case.
Perhaps the 6 monitor limit is more to keep the user from hooking up so many that they take up all the resources on a system, which could prevent him/her from doing anything useful.
It seems pretty simple to me. Limited Bandwidth.
Didn’t think about that, but yeah, you could be right. Even though I’m sure you’re required to run them over a USB 2.0 interface, there’s only so much you can push over it before ever device on a single channel starts to suffer.
