I have a project studio where I run a 3-monitor setup where I work off of two of the displays for recording and the 3rd one is extended into a vocal booth so vocalists can read lyrics or watch one of the mixer windows.

The problem is, that when in a program like Cubase that doesn’t differentiate between all the windows with taskbars, I have no way of knowing where the mixer is on the 3rd LCD screen should I wish to pull it to my screen to make modifications and then throw it back to the vocalist inside the booth. Instead I have to have two mice connected, one being inside the booth, walk over the it and use that mouse to the move the window to my screen and vice versa.

Is there any kind of utility that would allow previews of the contents of each screen to be shown on one of the main monitors where I could drag windows from the preview back and forth between monitors? Otherwise I’m blind as soon as I put something on the vocal booth screen.

Hello Philip,

I am working on the assumption that you need a minimum of 2 screens to work with your studio application.

The most common solution in this application is to split the signal for the third monitor into 2 monitors. This way you can have a 3rd display at your desk that shows a mirror image of what is shown in the studio.

If you only have a short distance you can get a simple splitter without an amplifier.
Here is an example of a VGA splitter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812120153

Purchasing a 4th display can be expensive, but the time saved from not having to interrupt the recording process would hopefully balance it out.

10 is the maximum for Windows XP and Vista. This is due to a limitation in “Display Properties”. I have not tested it myself, but I have herd of enthusiasts breaking the 10 display barrier after using UltraMon. And other 3rd party applications.

Side note: Windows NT does not support multiple monitors.

It happens all the time. You change your multi-monitor configuration in some way and now there is a window unreachable off the side of the screen. Way out in right field your Skype buddy list is napping, or even your web browser. This is because applications try to be intelligent and remember their last location for next time they are used.

The first step to resolution is admitting you have a problem. You open a new web browser and it is nowhere to be found. But you can see it in the task bar. Clicking on it multiple times you can see it restore with a ghostly visual queue that it is going up and to the right where your monitor used to be. Aha! Now you know where the little devil is, you can begin the work to reeling it back in. Right click on it in the task bar and select “Move”. This allows you to move the window using your arrow keys.

But what if you do not have a move option? No problem. Alt+Tab till the desired window is selected, Alt+Space Bar, then press “M” for move, Press “Enter” when the window is finally in view. This works for Skype and many other programs which strip the “Move” option from the task bar menu.

If you are trying to get Aero working in Windows Vista then I recommend you make sure you first meet all the Requirements for Aero. If your pretty sure you do then you may like to know that in short you can only use video cards that share the same driver. Mix and matching video cards is a surefire way for Vista to kick you out of the entire Glass experience.

Some clues may be an error message stating “Incompatible display adapter has been disabled”. You can learn all about this issue a MultiMonitor Support and Windows Vista

Now that you have that problem solved, the only thing you have to worry about now is Vista’s supposed 10 native display limit. I would love to test this out to see if it is true as soon as I have the appropriate motherboard that can handle 5 video cards
